Dear Ruth, My dog had to be put to sleep a few days ago. I’ve been depressed since, and wonder if I’m imagining seeing the ghost of my dog. I wake up smelling his awful breath, and listening to his asthmatic breathing. Sometimes I see his outline, but he’s not solid. Can pets be ghosts or am I going crazy? JM Dear JM, You’re not crazy. My hunch is your dog is feeling your sadness and is trying to comfort you. Trust your sense of smell, sound and sight. Enjoy the reunion while it lasts. His work will be done when you’re feeling better.
Ruth: One evening, a friend asked if our dog’s ghost was lying on his feet (her favorite spot)? We said yes and his voice shook as he asked, “Could you please move her?” We told our dog to leave, and our friend never visited us again. Recommended Reading: Do Dogs Go To Heaven? by Jean Holmes.
